Vettriano #1 is a hat which I intended to keep for myself, but that is ultimately destined to adorn someone else’s head. It has an open crown with an exaggerated reverse-taper; one of my favourites 1930s style influences. It has a blocked brim with a down-turned front and a more pronounced up-turned back. At 2 1/2 inches, this also has a slightly wider brim than typically found on a classic English snap brim. It has one of my favourite side-bow details; some refer to this style as a “shark-fin” - it has a row of vertical pleats with striking geometric simplicity and clean lines. Very Art Deco. Somehow the combination of the 1930s high crown and this particular brim block evoke for me an image of the hats worn in many of Jack Vettriano’s paintings. This hat is fully lined with leather sweatband.
