Gus is an example of a hat that evolved during the making process. While developing the concept for London Life, I was exploring creases for the crown when the rough shape of Guss emerged. It seemed so natural and obvious to me that this hats must be fully realised. I had some vintage grosgrain ribbon in an almost identical shade of taupe. The width of this ribbon and the rough crown shape lent itself to an early 20th Century Western style. The soft brim of this hat needed some structure; I simply formed a pencil curl on the flat brim. This gives the hat a very natural sweep to the brim which adapts to the wearer, responding to handling and reshaping. I added a natural pheasant feather and some self-colour tassels made from the off cut of the brim trimming process.
